Sometimes it’s nice to just be able to set up your camera, sit comfortably and wait for the birds come to you.
At the end of March I spent another morning at Battiste’s B&B in Lower Miller Canyon, Hereford, for another try at the Piñon Jay. It semi-cooperated by calling loudly behind me while I was in the photo blind and then quickly disappeared when I attempted to see it. So for now, it remains a “heard-only” bird. The other rarity, the Golden-crowned Sparrow was much more cooperative, just as it was on my last visit.
Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla)
I love birding here — the variety of birds is amazing and photographic opportunities abound. Woodpeckers were very cooperative on this lovely spring morning.
Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus)
Ladder-backed Woodpecker, male (Picoides scalaris)
